A full set of protective gear has five parts. Below we go through each one and show what to look for.
The five essentials
- Helmet: ECE 22.06 approved, a good fit, no damage. (Details in our helmet article.)
- Motorcycle jacket: strong material (leather or textile), with shoulder and elbow armour, preferably prepared for a back protector.
- Gloves: reaching the wrist or beyond, with a reinforced palm and a secure wrist strap. In a fall we instinctively protect ourselves with our hands.
- Motorcycle trousers: with armour (knee, hip), made of strong material. Jeans will not protect your skin in a slide.
- Motorcycle boots: protecting the ankle, with a stiff, non-slip sole. Ankle armour and a high shaft make a big difference.
What does CE approval mean?
Motorcycle clothing and armour carry a European certificate. The product description often states the protection class of the clothing (for example AA or A), and whether the armour is Level 1 or Level 2. Level 2 armour absorbs more impact. Ask in the shop what the item you have chosen can do.
Ventilation and weather
- For summer, ventilated (mesh or perforated) pieces, combined with a removable waterproof liner.
- For winter or rain, a jacket and trousers with a waterproof, removable thermal liner.
- For visibility, reflective details or bright colours.
Size: always try it on
The armour must stay in place even in a seated riding position, and it must not shift. Choose clothing that is well cut but not tight. On the gear pages you will find a size guide for each product.
For information only. Protective gear is no substitute for careful riding that follows the rules.
