Choosing a helmet: size, standard and type

The helmet is the most important piece of your gear. A good helmet is not the most expensive one, but the one that fits your head well and that you like wearing.

1. Measure your head

Wrap a fabric tape measure around your head above the eyebrows, at the widest point. Choose your size from the centimetres you get:

Head circumferenceSize
53–54 cmXS
55–56 cmS
57–58 cmM
59–60 cmL
61–62 cmXL
63–64 cmXXL

Sizing differs a little between brands, and head shape matters too (rounder or more oval), so it is worth trying a helmet on.

2. The standard: ECE 22.06

For newly approved helmets, the current European standard is ECE 22.06. It requires stricter impact and rotational tests than the earlier 22.05. You will find the mark on the chin strap or on the label inside the helmet.

3. Helmet types

4. How should it fit?

5. When to replace it?

Replace a helmet after a fall or a hard impact, even if you cannot see any damage from the outside. Manufacturers recommend a new one after about 5 years of use, because the materials age. Never buy a used helmet: you cannot know what it has been through.
